The term is drawn from the physical rhythm it mimics: after a sustained exertion, a breath is necessary before the next effort can begin, and a narrative that never permits this pause risks exhausting the reader's capacity to feel tension at all.

Function Within Pacing

A breath scene is not the same as a slow pace sequence, though the two share techniques. A slow pace sequence is typically a structural phase — an extended stretch of setup, world-building, or aftermath. A breath scene is smaller and more localized: a short interlude, sometimes only a page or a few paragraphs, inserted between two high-tension sequences to reset the reader's emotional baseline.
