Arterial Supply to the Upper Limb

The Subclavian to Axillary to Brachial Sequence

The subclavian artery, arising from the brachiocephalic trunk on the right and directly from the aortic arch on the left, continues as the axillary artery upon crossing the lateral border of the first rib, and subsequently as the brachial artery upon crossing the inferior border of the teres major muscle, providing the principal continuous arterial pathway supplying the upper limb.

Forearm and Hand Arterial Branches

The brachial artery divides near the elbow into the radial and ulnar arteries, which course through the forearm and ultimately anastomose within the hand to form the superficial and deep palmar arches, providing redundant collateral arterial supply to the digits.


Arterial Supply to the Thoracic and Abdominal Viscera

Paired Abdominal Branches

The abdominal aorta additionally gives rise to paired lateral branches, including the renal arteries supplying each kidney and the gonadal arteries supplying the testes or ovaries, together with segmental lumbar arteries supplying the posterior abdominal wall.


Arterial Supply to the Lower Limb

Terminal Bifurcation and the Iliac System

The abdominal aorta terminates by bifurcating into the left and right common iliac arteries, each of which subsequently divides into an internal iliac artery, supplying the pelvic viscera and gluteal region, and an external iliac artery, continuing the principal arterial pathway toward the lower limb.

The Femoral to Popliteal to Distal Sequence

The external iliac artery continues as the femoral artery upon crossing beneath the inguinal ligament, subsequently continuing as the popliteal artery upon passing posterior to the knee, before dividing into the anterior and posterior tibial arteries supplying the leg and, ultimately, the foot.
