Overdrive Pacing

Overdrive pacing is a technique used in cardiology to study and manage arrhythmias by artificially increasing heart rate.

Overdrive pacing is a cardiac electrophysiology technique where the heart is electrically stimulated at a rate faster than its intrinsic rhythm. The primary purpose of overdrive pacing is to suppress abnormal automaticity or reentrant arrhythmias by capturing the myocardium with rapid pacing impulses, thereby overriding the heart’s native pacemaker activity.

By pacing the atrium or ventricle faster than the tachycardia rate, overdrive pacing can interrupt the arrhythmia circuit.

Prevention of Arrhythmias

In patients with bradyarrhythmias who are at risk of tachyarrhythmias, overdrive pacing may be programmed in pacemakers to prevent pauses or suppress ectopic beats that trigger tachycardia.
