Expression Evaluation

Evaluation transforms a variable expression, whose value is undetermined in general, into a fixed numerical expression tied to one particular choice of input values.
Substitution
Substitution is the specific act of replacing a variable with its assigned numerical value wherever that variable appears in the expression, prior to carrying out any arithmetic. Substitution must be applied consistently: if a variable appears multiple times within an expression, every occurrence of that variable must be replaced with the same value during a single evaluation.
Variable Assignment
Variable assignment is the act of associating a specific numerical value with a particular variable for the purpose of evaluation, effectively declaring what that variable stands for within the current calculation. A variable assignment does not change the variable's role within the general expression; it simply fixes a value to be used for one particular evaluation.
Simultaneous Substitution

Expression Value

The expression value is specific to the particular values substituted; assigning different values to the same variable in the same expression generally produces a different expression value.
Exact and Approximate Evaluation
Exact evaluation is evaluation that produces a precise, fully accurate result with no rounding involved, such as evaluating 3x + 2 at x = 5 to obtain exactly 17. Approximate evaluation is evaluation that produces a result rounded to a limited number of decimal places because the exact value is irrational, impractical to express fully, or the input values themselves are only known approximately, such as evaluating an expression involving the square root of 2 and reporting the result rounded to two decimal places.
Undefined Evaluation
Undefined evaluation occurs when substituting the given values into an expression produces an operation with no valid mathematical result, most commonly division by zero or an even root of a negative number within the real numbers. When an evaluation is undefined, the expression simply has no value for that particular substitution, and this outcome must be recognized and reported as such rather than forced into an incorrect numerical answer.
Together, these definitions describe the full process by which a general algebraic expression is converted into a specific numerical outcome: assigning values to variables, substituting them consistently (simultaneously when more than one variable is present), and carrying out the arithmetic to arrive at an expression value that may be exact, approximate, or, in certain cases, undefined.
