Gathering the Newly Generated Terms

Once every grouped factor in an expression has been distributed, all of the resulting individual terms are collected together into a single flat list, regardless of which original group each term came from, forming the raw material for the next stage of simplification.

Like Terms Created by Expansion

Distribution often produces new terms that turn out to be like terms, either with each other or with terms that already existed outside the distributed groups, and identifying these matches is the necessary next step before the expanded expression can be reduced any further.

Coefficient Combination after Distribution

Once like terms among the generated terms are identified, their coefficients are added or subtracted together exactly as with any other like-term combination, producing a single term in place of the separate matching terms.

Immediately after distribution, before any like terms have been combined, the expression is in its expanded but unreduced form: every grouping symbol has been removed, but the resulting terms may still include several like terms sitting separately rather than combined into one.

Reduced Expanded Form

After all like terms have been identified and combined, the expression is in its reduced expanded form: every group of like terms has been merged into a single term, leaving the shortest possible list of terms that still represents the same value as the original expression.

Final Term Sign Formatting

Once the reduced expanded form is reached, each term is written with its sign directly attached, and terms are typically ordered from the highest power of the variable to the lowest, ending with any constant term, giving the result a clear and conventional presentation.

Complete Expansion Stop Condition

The process of expanding and reducing is complete once no grouping symbols remain in the expression and no two remaining terms share the same variable part; at that point, no further distribution or combination is possible, and the expression is considered fully simplified.
