Backlog Item Status and Traceability ensures visibility, accountability, and traceability of tasks throughout the agile project lifecycle.

Backlog Item Status and Traceability is the practice of explicitly recording each item's current state and maintaining a reliable trail connecting that item to its origin, its related items, and the decisions that shaped its journey through the backlog. Status answers the question of where an item stands right now; traceability answers the question of how it got there and what it connects to, and together they allow anyone examining the backlog to understand both the present condition of a piece of work and the history and context behind it.


Status: Representing Current Condition

Explicit, Standardized Status Values

Rather than leaving an item's condition to informal inference, teams assign it one of a small set of standardized status values — such as new, refined, ready, in progress, blocked, or done — so that its state can be understood consistently by anyone viewing the backlog.

Status as a Communication Tool

A clearly marked status allows stakeholders and team members to answer common questions — what is currently underway, what is blocked and why, what remains untouched — without needing to ask the team directly each time.

Consistent Status Vocabulary
